What is Square Foot Gardening?
Why square foot garden?
You get to grow food in the least amount of space, which means the least amount of maintenance required. Weeds are a menace, so the less space for them to grow in the better!
The basic idea of square foot gardening is to have a box of equal length and width and divide this box into one square foot areas; each of these square foot spaces will be planted.
The number of seeds to be placed in each square foot depends on the size of the plant. Small crops (such as radishes and carrots) can have 16 plants in each square with three inches in between them.
Medium plants (spinach, large turnips, bush beans) can have nine plants per square foot with four inch spacing required. Large plants need to be placed six inches apart (leaf lettuce, parsley) thus can be planted four to a square. Some require a whole square for each plant; broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, and peppers are all considered extra-large plants. This scheme is captured perfectly in the picture below in these seed squares. The idea is to let one seed thrive from each circle.
Spacing of Plants
There are three categories of plants in space gardening. The following chart gives a list of vegetables you can grow and the number of vegetables you can grow per square foot.
How to Get Started
First of all, you need a raised bed 12 to 16 inches in depth. While a 4 foot by 4 foot space is ideal, you can grow significant amounts of food in smaller spaces. You can line the box and fill it with rich organic soil. The square foot garden concept is perfect for urban landscaping, indoor farming and for anyone who is interested in eating fresh, organic great tasting food. This is a great model for sustainable urban agriculture! Want an even better understanding?
